One night. Four music legends. A celebration of the songs that became the soundtrack of generations.
Some songs just hit differently. The opening notes of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” the smooth vocals of Luther Vandross on “A House Is Not a Home,” or the unmistakable guitar of Prince’s “Purple Rain” can instantly take you back to a moment in time.
On Saturday, Nov. 7, Greenville audiences will have an opportunity to relive those memories when Showtime Legacy Theatre Company presents “Night of Legends” at 7:30 p.m. at McAlister Auditorium on the campus of Furman University.
The one-night-only theatrical music revue celebrates four of the most influential artists in Black music history: Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, Prince and Chaka Khan.
Featuring powerhouse vocalists, a live band and multimedia storytelling, the production promises an evening of R&B, soul, funk and pop classics that have shaped generations.
More Than a Tribute Concert
“Night of Legends” isn’t your typical tribute show. There are no impersonators attempting to recreate the original artists. Instead, regional performers will bring their own voices and interpretations to some of the most recognizable songs in music history.
The production unfolds in four movements — JOY, HONOR, LOVE and CELEBRATION — taking audiences on a musical journey through the emotions and memories connected to these legendary performers.
Audiences can expect favorites including “Never Too Much,” “Ain’t Nobody,” “1999” and “I Will Always Love You.”
“These artists didn’t just make hit records. They gave us music that became part of our lives,” said Johnny Sizemore, executive director of Showtime Legacy Theatre Company. “There are songs that take you straight back to a person, a place or a moment you haven’t thought about in years. That’s what we’re bringing to the stage. Not impersonations. Not karaoke. A celebration of the music and the people who gave it to us.”
Celebrating Black Culture Through the Arts
Beyond the music, “Night of Legends” represents another step forward for Showtime Legacy Theatre Company, a Spartanburg-based nonprofit dedicated to preserving Black culture through professional theatre, arts education and storytelling.
Following its inaugural theatrical production, “BACKBONE,” the company is expanding its programming to include musical revues that celebrate the cultural contributions of Black artists.
Under the artistic direction of Devon Scott and musical direction of Shaikeem Poole, the production will feature fresh arrangements of familiar favorites while creating performance opportunities for regional talent.
“We’re building a theatre company that can tell a powerful story one night and bring an entire audience to its feet the next,” Sizemore said. “Greenville has a strong appreciation for the arts, and we want to contribute to that community with work that’s thoughtful, entertaining and produced at a high level.”
For generations, the music of Houston, Vandross, Prince and Khan has been more than entertainment. Their songs have filled family cookouts, wedding receptions, living rooms and dance floors. They’ve provided the soundtrack to first loves, heartbreaks, celebrations and everything in between.
“Night of Legends” offers audiences a chance to experience that music together, while supporting a regional theatre company committed to keeping Black artistic expression at the forefront.
